warm Blue water inshore, is it holding fish?

Warm blue water inshore! Is it holding fish?

Man the SST shots, chlorophyll and altimetry look absolutely epic right now!! It appears this nor-easter type system pushing down for the north east has pushed warm very blue water, well inshore of the 100 fathom line! From as far north as the Elephant Trunk all the way down to the Parking Lot and that area, any of the inshore lumps in the 15-30 fathom range between Washington and Wilmington, it all looks great right now! Unfortunately it has been so rough there hasn’t been to many boats getting out to provide us with catch reports, but we are gonna try and head out on Wednesday and make a catch report! We’ll check back in tomorrow and will be keeping a close eye on the water! Tight Lines!

Time to start hunting for bluefin!

Time to start hunting for Bluefin!?

The wind has been relentless, but we always have these windy days in September, it is also hurricane season so all things considered it could be worse! We saw onThursday Capt. Steve and crew on the meat wagon out of Chincoteague caught this 64” Bluefin on a spinning rod and jig! Which is awesome to see, they didn’t say where they caught it, but I’d be willing to bet they weren’t to far offshore, specially with the conditions how they’ve been, and based off where we caught them last fall/winter. Spots out of Chincoteague like “The Hill” (37° 31.300’ 75° 22.010’) or 21 Mile Hill (37° 25.870’ 75° 12.060’) would be my guess as to where they may have caught it. To the north good places to look now would be Masseys Canyon, 19 Fm lump, South Paw, 20 Fm Fingers, in that area, however they will eventually push in even further inshore, like last year by the second week of November they were stacked up at Femwick Shoal and Isle of Wight Shoal and the Bass Grounds. The Wahoo and Billfish should still be around too, there is an eddy just east of the Wilmington that’s looking really good, for anyone looking for billfish or big eyes, I’d say the Wilmington is looking great, and that eddy should continue to push south and possibly even further inshore with this system that’s moving in from the north east. We’ll be keeping an eye on things over the weekend and getting prepared for when this wind does eventually die out! Tight Lines!

Wind wind wind

Saturday was the last time we got confirmed reports of tuna, both yellowfin and bluefin were caught. Conditions look like they will remain pretty windy and unfishable all week, we might get a slight window on Wednesday or Thursday but we will have to keep an eye on it. It will be interesting to see how all the east and north east wind will affect the water and fish! Let’s hope it blows some of that blue warmer water even further inshore and we can get one last hot tuna bite on the inshore lumps! Chunking has been good this time of year in the past, so we are hoping to find the tuna on one of the lumps and get them on the chunk, but we will also continue to troll as well. Soon as we have more updates we will keep you all in the loop! Also we are looking at January for our offshore seminar, and will cover rip charts and other data and info we use when planning a trip, radar usage, how to locate birds, fish, and bait, different types of birds and what they mean, matching the hatch, tides and how they can effect the bite, identifying current, tackle rigging with our mate Alex, behind the wheel with Capt. Jeff gps set ups and settings, what he looks for, trolling speeds, using auto pilot, what he looks for in a mate and when building a tournament team. Starlink and how big of a game changer it is and how we use it, seasonal trends, wind patterns and understanding wind, and more! You won’t wanna miss it!!

Yellowfins are chewing!

We got wind that Restless lady got their limit over night last night with some huge yellowfins in the mix! The evening/night bight seems to be the ticket! We think it could have a lot to do with the current solar/lunar phase we’re in as the moon isn’t rising till late afternoon, but either way the yellowfin are chewing! Hot Dog and Sausages seem to be the hot spot! You could try other lumps in the 20-30 fathom range but they seem to be stacked up in that area! Let’s see what happens today and tonight!!

3 yellowfin and 2 mahi at the hotdog

3 Yellowfins and 2 Mahi at the hotdog!

Well after doing a bit of exploring yesterday morning we checked The Washington and the good water we saw on the SST was there 74-76 degrees and very blue, but no whales and just not much life in around the 100 line and canyon. We did see mahi and I imagine there was billfish in 500-1000 fathoms in that blue water, and in poormans too. Next we moved north to the Rockpile and trolled a bit as a client who bought a report caught a wahoo there yesterday morning, we ended up picking off a nice stud 20-25lb mahi trolling near a thick weed line we passed but that was it. So then we ended up going to the hot dog where we knew for a fact our buddies were catching tuna, and sure enough that’s where they were! We hooked all 3 of ours on the troll, however lots of boats were chunking, it was pretty crowded, and from what we heard most boats only caught 1-3 tuna. We got one bite almost soon as we got there trolling around 130-2pm just outside the fleet of boats chunking maybe 1/2 mile from them, then caught skippys and a baby blackfin, but once the boats started to clear out from 330-630 the bite really turned on! We did try jigging/chunking for an hour with minimal effort cause we were marking the bait and fish consistently in the same area (pretty much where the fleet was) but not luck so we went back to trolling (which already worked once) at about 3 o’clock as some boats started to leave. One of the big advantages Jeff has over most captains is using his radar, he turned it on and started hunting for birds, and sure enough we found a pack of little tuna birds picking like crazy about 1/2 mile away from the fleet, and once we found those birds and stayed on em we’d get a bite almost every pass through them! The fish were missing the stingers and hooks for some reason on a lot of bites, and there were skippys and blackfin and mahi around too, but we think they were just not biting as aggressively. We also heard the best bite was on the greenstick which is also why we think it was mostly yellowfins just missing the hook when they streaked up from the bottom. We obviously were still happy to have the action we did and get the 3 yellowfin we did plus a couple bonus mahi, 2 of the 3 came between 3-7pm so it seems like an afternoon to evening bite for sure, although a few boats did catch early am as well. Tight lines if you're headed out today!

Tunas in the Washington

Tunas in the Washington

Word is there’s some yellowfins and possibly big eyes in the Washington canyon, well be headed out Wednesday and or Thursday to search and see what we can find, the Norfolk looks good also, that blue water the tuna were in that was in the Baltimore should be pushing south with all the north wind as well as the current pushing south and be in the Washington for the next few days. We’ll take a look again tomorrow and see if anything changes, there’s still lots of white marlin around as well as mahi, from Baltimore and poormans to the Washington mahi in every canyon probably. Tight lines

Fall fishing is here

Was a little sporty out there this morning, the wind is forecasted to lay out this afternoon, we’ll see if any boats venture out! Sometimes when we have an inconsistent tuna bite in the summer season like we had this year we will get a little action in the fall, so after seeing yesterdays tuna we are hoping that’s the case! We are gonna try and get out this week, there’s still plenty of mahi and billfish around, and most likely a few tuna lurking! Inshore the bite is heating up from bluefish to striper, speckled trout and red drum, we are seeing them caught all over! From around the inlet to the back bays, as temps are dropping and the water cools down the fish are pushing further into the back bays, which is a fun way to catch em! We also caught wind of a few bluefins in the mix! Hoping these northerly winds we’ve been having and colder temps, could possibly bring us an early bluefin run, it will be time to get out and start hunting for those before we know it!

tuna in the Baltimore

Tuna in Baltimore, northerly winds blow good water south...

A couple boats caught tuna today in the Baltimore canyon, the northerly winds over the last 3-5 days has blown some good water into our canyons. The Blue water stretches from the Spencer down to the Baltimore, there is also a nice chunk inside the Baltimore like the Tea Cup. It should continue to move south with the north wind. Wind is forecasted to lay out around noon tomorrow, tight lines we’ll check in tomorrow.

There’s still a good billfish bite

The billfish bite is still hot in canyons like Baltimore, Poormans and Washington even some reports from the Norfolk. Still not many reports of tuna, there were a few caught inshore to the north up near cape may. We are excited to see the inshore bluefin bite ramping up to the north in NY and Jersey, a lot of salt under but a few 100lb’rs mixed in, sounds like a good sign that we may have bluefin out front again this winter. The cobia seemed to have disappeared with the current northerly blow that has lasted the last 3-4 days. Inshore is beginning to turn on from flounder to speckled trout as well as striper and bluefish, the bays are loaded with bait, also still some quality sheepshead around and even some trigger fish caught off the north jetty. Tight Lines we are working hard now to get ready and transition into fall/winter mode and will be bringing a lot more for our members! Stay tuned we’ll check back in soon!

Marlin, Wahoo, and Mahi

Well it’s officially starting to feel like fall, kids are back in school, but the fish are still biting! White Marlin bite has been hot per usual for this tie of year, with a nice mix of wahoo and mahi as well. Unfortunately not hearing much about tuna but that doesn’t mean they aren’t out there! There is a nice eddy right now right over top of The Baltimore and Poormans canyons, with a nice stretch of blue water spanning from the Wilmington as far south as the Poormans, and then another patch of Blue water in the Washington canyon as well, either of those could be good as both bodies of blue water have good moving current from the eddy in-between the two patches of blue water, there is also a good salinity edge on both the Washington side as well as the Baltimore side of the eddy! It’s that time of year where the billfish are ind of all over! As for tuna I’m still leaning towards going north to the Wilmington or south to the Norfolk, one extreme or the other, but we have no real tuna reports to go off of so anglers in search of tuna will have to get out and put in time. Let’s hope we get another run of bluefin this fall/winter, the bluefin are already getting fired up in Jersey and NY! Tight Lines well check in tomorrow!

Happy Labor Day! Billfish season is upon us

Hope everyone has an awesome Labor Day! Billfish season is in full swing and before we know it some of the bigger boats will begin heading south or hauling out for winter maintenance, but as we move into the fall/winter season we will continue on with reports, wherever the most action is we will be reporting on it and providing analysis, whether its a late season billfish or tuna run, inshore cobia and sheepshead, to back bay speckled trout and red drum. We will also be doing some offshore seminars this winter Captain Jeff will be hosting from reading SST. shots and other satellite imagery and data, Alex will also be helping out with some of the other aspects of fishing like the spread they run, rigging, gear, techniques and more. Members will be the first ones to know about this stuff! Hopefully we have another winter bluefin run this year and can keep members up to date with that intel, but if not we will have lots of other tools and resources for anglers this winter, and chances are if your reading this you know us, and know we dob’t stop chasing fish lol we’re after em year round 365 days a year. If we’re catching em y’all will be first to know! Everyone have a good Labor Day and Tight Lines!

Sailfish, Blue Marlin & White Marlin

Sailfish, Blue Marlin, White Marlin

We saw quite a few boats coming in with Sailfish, Blue Marlin and White Marlin yesterday, Shad Darts crew was 2/2 on whites and also released one sail that hit their spread while they were trolling inshore inside the 100 line! From what we heard it was pretty rough in the morning but laid out by noon or 1 pm. Most of the fleet was fishing between the Baltimore and Poormans. We are currently looking at all the blue water to the north stretching from the Lindenkohl all the way down through the Wilmington and is now almost to the Baltimore. There is also the piece of blue water in the poormans. The Poormans looks the best at the moment with a strong large eddy right over top of it, however Baltimore and Wilmington could see good fishing as well. As the eddy moves south the Washington and Norfolk also could be good options, we’ll be keeping a close eye on it! Inshore conditions were tough to search for cobia, but they are still around, lots of mahi still around as well if you can find a polyball or something floating chances are you’ll find some mahi. Tight Lines we’ll check in later today or tomorrow!

Just as predicted, blue water pushing east!

Just as predicted blue water pushing east!

Can’t wait to see who all fishes tomorrow, and how they do! The east winds have pushed the blue water inshore of the 100 line and could make for some good fishing! Both the Poormans and Norfolk have eddys near by moving and pushing water through them and over the structure. Inshore should also be warmer and bluer whether you're closer to the beach searching for Cobia, or out at the Hot Dog looking for mahi and tuna! For tomorrow The Norfolk looks good, as well as Washington. Wilmington could also be a good option for tuna. Tight Lines we’ll check in later today or tomorrow.

Easterly onshore wind

This morning was beautiful but the wind has continued to build throughout the day and is now blowing pretty good at least 15-20 out of the ENE and is forecasted to blow all day tomorrow as well in the same direction dying down in the evening. It is a nor’aster by nature not the fierce type we’re used to thinking of when hearing nor’easter but a front coming from that direction blowing that cool air off the cool inshore water onto the hot shoreline creating the fog we’ve seen all summer. It is also very interesting how majority of the wind is offshore, inland there was no wind today, only along the coastline, but we’ll be curious to see if the strong east winds offshore blow some of that blue warm water in 1000 fathoms in closer up on the 100 line, and then in areas like the Norfolk the blue water that was on the 100 line could blow even further inshore, will be interesting to keep an eye on and track over the next few days. Saturday is looking beautiful and will be the day we get to see what the wind and front does to the water, will be a great day to get out and fish! The cobia could get blown even closer to shore, although they’re already being caught in crab pots, and off the bridge and from the surf, so they’re about as close as they get! The higher concentrations are still gonna be out at the wrecks 3-10 miles off the coast. Tight lines we’ll check in tomorrow.

More Billfish and cobia!

More billfish and Cobia!

More billfish and more cobia! A few different boats were able to find the cobia again at Winter Quarter Shoal, Jeff and Alex got out on the Skiff and got their 2 man limit of 2 cobia and caught and released another 8-10, they were picky eaters at times, but multiple boats were able to catch them yesterday. I imagine the cobia should hang out in the general area until the next big blow moves the water significantly. As far as the canyons go we’ve actually got quite a bit of blue water in and around the 100 line in almost every canyon. The bluest water at the moment is in the Norfolk canyon there is a nice piece right in the mouth of the canyon stretching up to the south side of the Washington, with some of the blue water in the Norfolk inshore of the 100 line. As it stretches north up into the Washington the bluer water is deeper to the east out towards 500-1000 fathoms, this is where there is high billfish activity and would be a great place to go for marlin. Then to the north the blue water that was in the Wilmington as pushed west inside the 100 line and is now right over the tip of the Baltimore, stretching south east as far south as Poormans and as far east as a 1000 fathoms. There is also more blue water to the north in the Spencer and Lindenkohl that should also have Marlin in 500-1000 fathoms. As I’m sure most of you all have seen the bill fish bite has been red hot! The real question right now is where is the best odds of catching some yellowfin or big eye, especially when it looks good almost everywhere? Well based off Altimetry we can see a nice eddy east of the Norfolk moving water through the Norfolk and Washington, then another eddy to the north east moving water through the Spencer and Lindenkohl. The Norfolk looks the best, deep in the Washington looks good, the tip of Baltimore is an option too, if you can make the run north to Spencer or Lindenkohl it could pay off big, but for most the Washington or Baltimore will probably make the most sense, or if you can make the run to the Norfolk that currently has the bluest water, an eddy nearby moving water through the canyon, a nice hard salinity edge, and even some nice 2 degree temperature breaks on the SST shots, so that’s our recommendation. For inshore you have the cobia which can be found anywhere from Winter Quarter Shoal to Fish Haven or Atlantic Mist, any of the near shore wrecks or lumps. Then this week I would try spots in the 20-30 fathom range Parking Lot, 29 Fathom Lump, Rock Pile, would all be good areas to work, also to the north Hambone, Hot Dog, Tea Cup and that area. We are gonna try and head out tomorrow morning and might do some more inshore exploring ourselves on the skiff and maybe get on more cobia, or look for some schools of red drum! Lots of options this time of year! Good luck and tight lines!

Cobia madness inshore

Cobra Madness inshore!

The cobia have made their presence known off the coast of Ocean City, from Winter Quarter, to Femwick Shoal boats are spotting, catching and spearing nice size cobra! Remo of Black Magic and his crew were able to get them on rod and reel as well as spear one stud! As many of you saw the Billfish bite is hot also with Billfishes Releasing 40 whites! The Bluewater that was in the Poormans is making its way into the Washington now, and there is also the Blue water in the Wilmington, we heard White and Blue marlin were caught in both bodies of blue water, as well as some tuna mixed in to the north in the Wilmington. We are also keeping our eye on an eddy to the south of the Norfolk that could push into the Norfolk and mix things up. Let’s hope the cobia and billfish stick around and some fun fishing continues! Let’s end the season with a bang! Tight Lines! Stay Bent!

Hot billfish bite in poormans

Billfishes has released 16 white marlin this morning! A couple other boats are also out there getting in on the action, it seems like that blue water in the poormans in 500-1000 fathoms is holding some billfish! 500-1000 fathoms in the Spencer canyon was holding billfish as well. We also got word there are no pots at the Jackspot right now so don’t go to Jackspot for mahi, one tuna also was caught at Poormans as well as some mahi at the Rock Pile. The Bluewater to the north in the Wilmington is also looking very good for big eye, yellowfin and billfish as well! Lake Atlantic again today hopefully y’all are taking advantage! Good luck and Tight Lines!

Lake Atlantic, Big Eyes in Wilmington

Both the Wilmington and Spencer are holding big eye and yellowfin, multiple confirmed reports of tuna caught in both the northern canyons. We also have reports of mahi as close as Jack Spot as well as bonita mixed in. Wahoo are still being caught, Parking Lot, Hambone, Hot Dog would all be good places to high speed troll for wahoo and cover water, as always look for the life! Beautiful conditions out there to run and gun or cover ground and go further than normal! Not much has changed with the water since yesterday, we’ll check back in tomorrow, tight lines!

Mahi in the Washington, Big eye in Wilmington

Mahi in Washington, Big Eye in Wilmington

Well we got the boys together to attempt a repeat of last Thursday, however the big eye had different plans! We got to the Washington around 3pm and found a pot loaded full of mahi! We picked away at them for a good hour or two on light tackle and artificial jigs and paddle tails and had an absolute blast! We’ll post on the YouTube soon of all that action, Alex our mate even jumped in and speared a nice trigger and one nice mahi too! The whales were stacked up so we thought it was game on, we marked em good too, but they just wouldn’t come up to eat! We got word there was one big eye caught in the Wilmington yesterday, so seems like the blue water that is moving south down the 100 line into the Wilmington is probably the best bet for tuna, big eye in particular. The mahi seem to be everywhere, and the blue water in the Poormans looks good for billfish! Those are the two areas we are keeping an eye on at the moment, especially the Wilmington. Inshore lumps have been showing lots of life just no tuna, but lots of mahi and bonita around! Hot Dog, Hambone, Sausages, Parking Lot any of those lumps in the 15-30 fathom range should be holding plenty of life! Good luck and tight lines! We’ll talk to y’all tomorrow!

Blue water in poormans

Blue Water in Poormans

We’re half way through the MA500 and we have seen several marlin weighed in as well as a few tuna, and it looks like we may have some decent conditions coming this weekend. Looking at the water in the canyons we don’t have to much happening at the moment as far as distinct eddies forming however there is one eddy just south of the Norfolk we are keeping an eye on and a big push of salty water that has created a couple nice salinity edges in both the Washington and Norfolk, could be worth trying for anyone fishing down to the south! However chlorophyll shots are showing the bluest water in the Baltimore and Poormans, which I believe is the same water that was in the Spencer and Wilmington. It should continue to move south, especially after yesterdays North-West wind. Currently taking everything into consideration, I’d say the best odd’s at the moment would be south side of the Baltimore or the Poorman’s, start on the 100 line and work east, look for life, breaks in temperature or changes in water color. Inshore there is a small piece of blue water just inshore of the Poormans, the Rock Pile (37° 39.210’ 74° 21.720’), 29 Fathom Lumps (37° 44.060’ 74° 35.520’) or the Parking Lot would all be a great place to try! We also saw lots of life near the Hot Dog on our last trip! Good luck and Tight Lines!
