More Windy conditions ahead..
More wind ahead, but steady picking at yellowfin
Again the weather is gonna make for some tough fishing this week, but we did see some more yellowfins come to the dock, and some good white marlin action as well. Yellowfins were caught from the Baltimore and Poorman's to as far south as the Washington, a lot of them were caught in deep water 500-1000 fathoms, but there were a couple caught on the 100 fathom line and even a couple in 80 fathoms. Hopefully it will only get better from here as the tuna begin to settle in to the area and feed for the next couple months. Tomorrow looks rough, but being a Saturday there will most likely be a few charter boats who fish so we’ll see how they do. Sunday is looking better but still rough, and Monday should be fishable the ocean will still be churned up but the wind is supposed to lay out. If you are fishing, the Baltimore and Poormans have been producing consistently, start in the mouth of the canyon and work east toward deeper water. There is a nice eddy of blue water just east of the Baltimore. Look for breaks and color changes in the water and of course look for life. Still not hearing to much about the inshore bite but I’d bet there’s some tuna and other life at the Jackspot worth looking if you're staying inshore anyways or on a smaller boat with less range. Tight Lines.
Night Update happy 4th of July..
Just to update lots of tuna were caught today both by charter boats and private boats which is a good sign, however its still only a handful of tunas for most boats, I think one boat had 4 and that was the most all the others had either 1 or 2, which is again very low numbers this far into summer. The Poormans and Baltimore have been consistent with a few caught in the Wilmington and Washington as well but very sporadic, you're lucky to get 2, the silver lining is we are seeing nice mahi as well as white marlin in the mix too which is great to see. There was also one reported Blue Marlin released today as well. Im happy we have something to report and glad to see boats catching, but still really hoping the tuna bite heats up soon!! Tight Lines and Happy 4th of July!
More White Marlin than Tuna…
Lots of boats got out to fish in the beautiful weather and conditions we had yesterday, but we are still seeing the same trend continue, sporadic fishing. Quite a few boats caught tuna and mahi but not in any real numbers 2 or 3 here and there, which just isn’t the norm for this time of year. Sea Hag was one of a few boats to capitalize on the White Marlin bite releasing 6, and quite a few other boats released white marlin as well. Tuna were caught in both the Baltimore and Poorman’s yesterday, and the blue water didn’t seem to important, let’s hope things are starting to pick up and the tuna will push even further inshore!
Another perfect day..
Another Perfect Day..
Weather is perfect as we expected! We got conformation the Wrecker caught 6 tuna in the Poorman’s yesterday however the bite was very sporadic. Spring Mix and a couple other boats also caught a few in the Baltimore. Our recommendation would still be fishing between the Wilmington and the Baltimore, that is where SST and Chlorophyll shots show the best water. Wrecker caught their fish in green water so that band of blue water hasn’t quiet reached the Poorman’s yet, we believe further to the north their should be a lot of life and some tuna too! If. you can make the run we think it’s worth going further north!
Finally a break from the weather…
Finally a break in the weather!
Tuesday July 2nd and the wind has finally laid out enough to fish! Today and tomorrow are both looking beautiful for just about any sized boat to fish! Yesterday a few sport boats ventured out in the wind and the boat Spring Mix ended up with 9 Yellowfins fishing just north of the Baltimore! As we said yesterday we are still watching that same smaller eddy, which may be moving faster south than we realized! That is good news for us fishing the Mid Atlantic Canyons! Also gives us some hope that the bigger eddy further to the north will also push down into our canyons in the next week! For now based on SST and Chlorophyll shots we still recommend fishing between the Wilmington and Baltimore Canyons, there is a nice piece of blue water pushed in almost to the 100 line now, as well as a nice little eddy of warmer water that is currently hovering right in-between the Wilmington and The Baltimore and we have conformation of those tuna caught yesterday just north of the Baltimore. Jeff and the Bad Habit crew are out there now we will post updates throughout the day as we receive them! Tight Lines! Wednesday is looking good!
Wednesday is looking good!
It’s July 1st and we are all itching to get back out and get after some Tuna! The weather has been relentless especially for guys on smaller center consoles and boats that just can’t handle those big rough seas and high winds. The guys up to the north in northern New Jersey and New York have been having some spectacular fishing out near the Hudson canyon, there is a big eddy up there holding lots of life and some of the best fishing they’ve seen in years. Many reports of Big Eye, Blue fin and Yellowfin, with some boats catching as many as 30-40 Tuna in a trip!! Let’s hope we are up next and that eddy pushes down the 100 line into our Mid Atlantic canyons! There is also a filament peeling off the gulf stream and starting to form an eddy just to the north east of the Wilmington, this piece of water lines up perfectly with the blue water that’s also pushing in from the Gulf Stream. Looking at both SST Temps and Chlorophyll we recommend fishing between The Wilmington and The Spencer, for those willing to make the run, or those in Delaware or Southern New Jersey the Lindenkohl also looks great! As of now we are planning on fishing both tomorrow and Wednesday, if the weather permits. Tomorrow we will try and run a bit further north towards the Spencer Canyon, then depending what it looks like when we get out there tomorrow, and how we do, will dictate our plan for Wednesday. We will have a fresh report bright and early tomorrow morning and updates throughout the day on social media and our private Facebook group “Always Bent Academy” If all goes to plan and that eddy continues to peel away from the Gulf Stream and push further inshore and further south, along with that blue water, by Wednesday there should be some good fishing in the Wilmington canyon! Tight Lines! If you have any questions shoot us an email alwaysbentfishing@gmail.com or DM us on Instagram @alwaysbentfishingoc
Weather forecast is brutal!
Weather Forecast is Brutal!
We just cannot catch a break from the weather this summer! It’s going to be super rough starting today moving into Tuesday, Wednesday is looking like the only fishable day next week (unless you're in a big sporty) but we will be keeping a close eye on the weather. There is an awesome eddy up to the north of us right now, the guys in northern NJ and parts of NY have been slaying them! We’ll be watching to see how that eddy moves down the line and hopefully pushes into our canyons and is still holding some fish! Yesterday was pretty sporty but some boats did still fish, mostly sport boats and bigger center consoles. Pumpin Hard and The Marli each caught a handful of tuna yesterday boating about 5 yellowfins each, Ro-Sham-Bo also had 1 nice Bluefin and 1 Yellowfin, but those are some of the best boats in the fleet, the fishing has still been tough, most boats are still happy to catch 1 or 2 fish, the boats that are coming home with numbers are getting wolf packed by a group of 3-5 tuna, but we aren’t hearing reports of guys getting covered up multiple times or coming home with a limit. Normally by this point in summer the charter fleet is smashing em daily, and even the guys in center consoles are doing decent, but this year has just been tough tuna fishing! We’re hoping to get out Wednesday and we will update you all as to where we are thinking of fishing! As of right now we are looking at a small eddy forming just east of the Wilmington, hoping it pushes further in to the east and also moves south landing right around the Baltimore and Poorman’s, but we will continue to keep an eye on the water and weather as we get closer to Wednesday!
more rough conditions…
More Rough Conditions…
Unfortunately the weather has been relentless the last week or so here in the Mid-Atlantic, some boats made it out Thursday and Friday as you saw in the last report. The bite wasn’t quite red hot like it was last week, however fish are still being caught! We got word “Reel Tight” boated 7 yellowfin’s this morning 6.29.2024 but haven’t heard where they were fishing yet. Jeff and the Bad Habit crew went out this am to explore the inshore waters in hopes of bluefin or possibly even yellowfin, we saw flying fish in some blue water inshore on our way in Thursday, so chances are the tuna will be pushing further inshore any day now! The water still looks great in the Poorman’s if you are thinking of fishing today or tomorrow or have a boat big enough to handle 4-6ft. seas, but unfortunately looks like most boats will be waiting till at least Tuesday before they can get back out there, in the mean time well be keeping an eye on the Sat Shots and standing bye…
Slow Fishing, more rough seas ahead..
Slow fishing, and more rough conditions ahead..
After the 4 day southerly blow, anglers were itching to get back out on Thursday. Most boats that left early had a wet ride out, but conditions improved throughout the day. Fishing was slow overall, we heard a few boats that had bites and caught a couple yellowfin in the Poorman’s, we missed a couple bites and caught a peanut mahi down near the Norfolk, and Remo on Black Magic went 1 for 2 on yellowfins in the Washington, and also caught a few mahi.
As we said in yesterdays report anglers are starting with a clean slate, the fish are moving around and spreading out, it may even be time to start looking further inshore!
As of now the Poorman’s or Washington is still a great place to start fishing. Lets hope this weather forecast improves…
High Winds and Rough Seas
High Winds and Rough Seas continue
6/27/2024
High winds and rough seas again today, but tomorrow is shaping up nice! Looking like a beautiful day to head offshore. We’ll be heading off early tomorrow morning and headed out just south of the Poormans. The water is moving around quite a bit and as the wind and weather passed by it has mixed things up, but that band of blue water is still in the same general area as previously reported stretching from east of the Wilmington ending down outside the Washington. SST Shots are showing good temperature breaks in the Baltimore, Poorman’s and Washington, any of those canyons would be a great starting point.
Once you decide on a canyon or area of water you want to work, look for the blue water and any signs of life, you may need to troll east into deeper water to find the blue water, pay close attention to significant temperature breaks. The birds have been helpful this year don’t ignore them.
Be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of fishing is that water is going to continue to change and the fish will move around, and your skills as a captain and angler will grow as you chase them around. We all have tough days of fishing but sometimes that’s when you learn the most, and those are the days when we are forced to think outside the box or try something different!
Rough Conditions Ahead
Rough Seas & Eddy in Baltimore
Unfortunately we have some rough conditions offshore the next few days, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on the weather, as of now its looking like Thursday might be the next good weather day.
We’re Keeping our eye on an eddy that has formed just east of the Baltimore Canyon and is slowly pushing south, it matches up with some blue water pushing into that same area, which should make for some good fishing! We will have to keep an eye and see how the weather effects the water but as of now that is the area we are looking to fish next!
There’s also still some water that looks good down in the Washington we will still keep an eye on. It is worth noting some blue, warm water has pushed inshore of the 100 line down to the south, guys willing to make the run south, or running out of Chincoteague, it could be worth trying for some tuna at some of the inshore spots, worst case the sea bass bite has been hot, as well as lots of Cobia and schools of Red Drum, so if you do decide to fish inshore you’ve at least got options!
Big Yellowfins!
Big Yellowfins!
The boys got on a stud 120lb yellowfin 11:30am bite, GPS Position N37°05.198’ W074°32.265’ just south of the Washington, hit a pink and purple spreader bar from 353 custom tackle. We saw birds working and took a pass through them and hooked up almost immediately. They Also caught one other nice yellowfin in the 30-40lb range. As of Friday the fish were still in and around the Washington Canyon, however now we have our eye on an eddy that has formed just up east of the Baltimore and Poorman’s, the blue water has also pushed into that same area, which should make for some good fishing! Unfortunately we have a poor weather window ahead for the next 3-4 days as of now its looking like Thursday might be the next good weather day, so we will be keeping an eye on things until then!
